The Moon Ritual

Is this a trick or treat?

Today, follow the bare feet of a coven of witches...

“Manifest with the Moon. We are water, and tonight, we will be one with the shifting waves,” said Owletta, glancing at each flickering face, hoping the seeds she planted on the new Moon would come to fruition.

“Yemaya hears our prayer,” said Willow, pushing her candle into the sand near her bare feet, reaching into her beach bag for another.

The coven sat, crossed-legged in a circle, whispering unintelligible prayers to the East wind, chanting, and beating their bare thighs like a drum. Willow swayed, lifting her arms over her head. Across from Willow, Wren threaded her long blond hair behind her ears, waiting for the East wind to blow away the cobwebs. Nettle of the North stared at the irregular star, etched into the sand between them, beating her thighs harder and jiggling her loose flesh like Gelatin. Across the circle, Owletta closed her black eyes, praying to Yemaya, Goddess of the ocean, water, and tides.

After several minutes the coven stood, breaking from the circle, collecting the water-filled mason jars, unscrewing the caps. Each Witch placed a jar in a corresponding corner of the sand-drawn star: North, East, South, and West. The moon water waited under a darkening sky.

Again, the coven formed a circle, staring at the horizon painted with a thin strip of orange. The rise of the Moon was nigh.

“Wren, your vanilla-scented candle smells cheap, like toast,” scolded Nettle.

Giggles erupted. “Someone’s coming!” said Willow.

The coven giggled louder, rushing to hide amongst the cemetery of gnarly driftwood, covering themselves with beach towels and goose-pimpled arms. “Bare skin is a Witches’ Sunday best,” said Nettle in a low voice.

The coven hid, listening to the waves until the silhouettes of two mysterious beachgoers disappeared into the night. The group took their places on the ground again, tipping the towels from their shoulders, looking to the horizon. They waited.

“Should we disperse our intentions?” asked Wren.

Owletta withdrew a tiny seashell from beneath her bare butt, throwing it towards the shore. “Yes,” she said.

The coven ransacked their beach bags, pulling handfuls of bay leaves from within. Willow came away with a single leaf, kneeling near a candle, reading the tiny message she had scribbled on the leaf in pencil. Willow kissed the leaf and stood, running towards the waves; the rest of the coven followed. Warm water washed over their feet, splashing eight legs with salty kisses. The women threw the bay leaves into the waters of Botany Bay. Simultaneously, a Full Moon crested over the horizon like the eye of a cyclops. “Look!” shouted Wren.

The coven stared, watching the disc rise, a ribbon of white flowing over the water like a coil of rope. Owletta wished she could pull it into her body, harnessing all the power of Yemaya. Owletta’s dreams for the coven felt as deep as the ocean. The Moon symbolizes my inner world, and what happens in the dark stays in the dark. She thought with a smile.

Bloodmoon phases.

Happy Halloween!

I See Dead People...

Halloween month continues with a post I grabbed from my creative writing blog - because I'm too darn busy to blog this week...

"If you annoy a kid with a crayon, you just might end up with fuzzy-wuzzy brown on your face." logic from Sharon Wagner: child artist, revenge advocate, recess crayon warrior.

More words of revenge wisdom from the internet....

1)  My silence is not weakness, but the beginning of my revenge.

2) A man who desires revenge should dig two graves...

3) When karma comes back to punch you in the face, I wanna be there...just in case it needs help.

4) Never go to bed angry, stay awake and plot revenge.

5) Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore.

Did you read number 5? I threw that in, just to show you I've grown up. Poor Theresa. She crossed the wrong girl. She didn't know I was packing heat. But not too much, it might melt my crayons. I remember drawing this, brain firing on all cylinders, laughing hysterically. (not really)

But, I have no idea what made me mad in the first place. Tyrone is the real loser. Figuratively, not literally. I deemed him objectionable enough to be a dire warning of a bleak future. Hey Theresa, if you dis me again, you'll end up married to Tyrone. Ha. Take that!  Of course, the last laugh might be on me. Because they were obviously married a long time and died on the same day. How romantic. Unfortunately, 2022 is fast approaching. It must have seemed so far in the future when I was in grade school.

I love my weird creativity in giving the girl ghost boobs. As you can see, both cadavers have their arms sticking straight up - there's no relaxing for the damned! Not in my world. Oddly, both ghosts need canes. (I guess to portray their feebleness) Is that a sun? In the middle of a black crayon night? Good grief. What was I thinking? The moon is my muse now. I love painting it. See below.

The good news is: I forgave Theresa for whatever the heck she did. But, will she forgive me if she sees this? I hope so.

My travel posts and blog link-up party will be back next week!

A Witch in Outer Space

This little witch is on a midnight ride for www.illustrationfriday.com  Well, she's been on this adventure for many, many moons. Because it is becoming old hat (get it?) for me to post it on Halloween. Well, that's just the way I roll. Or as the Moon turns...

The poor black cat wasn't able to hold on. Gulp. But luckily he landed on this oddly round asteroid. Or extremely small planet. And is relaxing for all eternity while drinking a tasty pumpkin beverage. That's how I roll too.

Dangerous Dusk

A stroll at dusk revealed a glowing skyline.

And some geese gliding by.  Unaware of any danger that might be lurking in the twilight.

Blood red vines hung like entrails along the real trail.

Things started to look spooky.

The pompous grass reached up to the heavens like the hands of a skeleton reaching up from the grave.

We felt like we were being watched.  You know the feeling...

Prickles started creeping up along our spines...

Zombies?  We were terrified!  We picked up the pace.  (But mostly because we were getting cold and tired)

I hope they can't get out...

You never know what will happen after dark.  Did we make it back alive?  Well, I'm writing this post. So it looks that way.

 But then again...
Maybe zombies can still read and write.

Happy Haunted Halloween from the Minneapple!

Yes, some people actually call it that!

Mummy and Me

By now I hope you've checked out my House of Franken Cat illustration.  See my last post!  I thought this old photo of me and my friend Loren was a perfect match.  I mean, look at that mummy.  He definitely needs an iron.  And a good steam clean. It makes me laugh at how he is kind of falling apart.  And that face. Yikes!

5 random Halloween memories for Random 5 Friday

1)  When I was a kid one of my classmates stepped on my sheet and tore my ghost costume.  And I went crying to my Mom. I should have just kept it to use on Loren's costume.  Silly me.

2) What is the weirdest thing you've seen stuffed into a nylon?  Well, if you are a flasher on Halloween you open up your London Fog and reveal an extra large stuffed (fake) thing a ma bob.  Maybe with some fake fur to add realism.  The good old days.

3) I could actually stay up until midnight to see who won the costume contest.  Again.  The good old days.

4) I kept disposable contacts on hand just for Halloween.  Serious business.

5)  Being Cleopatra for the night.  Priceless.

Entangled

Entangled.  To wrap, interweave or ensnare.  That sounds about right for my Halloween illustration, The House of Franken Cat.  Please click to enlarge or you will never be able to see the spookiness.  Now let the story unfold...

The story begins with poor little Franken cat sitting on the stoop.  All alone.  But wait.  Whose hand is knocking on the bottom of the door?  And whose hand is ready to open the door?  Geez. Who knows.  It probably belonged to a solicitor that knocked on the wrong door at the most inopportune time.  Maybe at the frightful hour of 6 pm when Mr. Pumpkin was puking in the dining room and the headless dude was spooning soup into his stump.

The hand was probably severed in the kitchen while the witches were making wiggly mouse pie.  Yum, yum.

The fate of the hand was sealed after it fingered its way into the master bedroom where an impatient Medusa was trying to comb the scales out of her hair.  And you think dandruff is bad.  Now the right hand is doomed to eternal life as a bodyless butler.

The mummy was too busy ironing his torn bed sheets to know what was going on with the roaming hand.  The skeleton inquired, "Hey hand. Can you squeeze the last bit of tooth paste out of this tube?  It's hard when you don't have any muscles." Whether the hand helped is not known.

Well, the body was never discovered.  But my guess is that the witches went all Fried Green Tomatoes with it.  If you know what I mean.  Have you seen the movie?

(Insert spooky background noise)

RIP Sharon and Dean

RIP Sharon Wagner... Doomed to recline in cemeteries casting spells on migrating geese and the occasional mischievous squirrel.  Thank goodness she got to wear her favorite chunky spider heels and nylons.  The only thing that truly scares her now is whether she will get a run in her stocking.  Her shadow minions eternally lurk in the back ground.  If her worst fear materializes, maybe they could make a pits of Hell stop at Walgreens.

RIP Dean Wagner... Doomed to roam Minnesota cemeteries looking for his wife.  Unfortunately the grounds keeper put her chair inside a mausoleum with some other rich dude.  A gold digger in life, now she is doomed to live through eternity above ground.  Maybe Dean could mix a strong Manhattan to coax her out. Just maybe...

P.S.  I'm back from the grave to tell you to check out my new photo sidebar widget.  Twin Cities Public Television is sponsoring an amazing collection of photographers in their Capture Minnesota photography contest.  I have 14 humble photos entered so far.  To vote click on my new widget. And be sure to stick around to view more of the amazing photography!

Witchy Woman

What is this deer so afraid of?

Me!!!! That's me standing in my childhood living room. Oh my gosh. Look at my beautiful hair. I actually had a very scary mask to go with my innocent looking costume. I think I even won a silver dollar at our small town grade school Halloween party. I only won one year. And of course I was so proud.

Flash forward a few years. I'm certainly not revealing how many. And here I am again all witched out. No more glorious locks. I'm sporting a black wig. That darn wig saw me through many a year of costumes. Starting with Cleopatra. Did you notice my feet? I put big spiders on my toes. And I wore that size 2 vintage dress every time I was a witch over a 10-15 year time frame. But lets just say that I had to stop wearing it. Hmmm. I'm not sure why that would be. But the good news is that me and the hubbs won again. I think we snagged a bottle of vino for our troubles. Blood red of course. This was the trick and be sure to stop back on Wednesday for my first installment of treats! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

This Old House

This old house definately is not my house. I wonder who lives here? If walls could talk they might say...An honorable group of bats pay top dollar for the attic space. Unfortunately a freeloading family of squirrels noticed the bat's nightly migration. Now the freeloaders sneak in every night rent free. A squeaky clean family of mice have rented out the interior. Meanwhile a posse of masked bandits have taken over the kitchen. They are able to do what ever they want since they are the only animals capable of carrying a gun. (with their opposable thumbs) The basement has been completely taken over by spiders. Can you imagine the nerve it would take to build a house on someone else's property? Well, spiders do it all the time with their webs. And then there are the centipedes. They are under the impression they can out run the landlord. Have you ever seen one streak by at night? And speaking of things that go bump in the night. Try collecting rent from a ghost sometime. No wonder this place needs a coat of paint.

Bats and Cats

I haven't run out of Halloween stuff yet. These 3 kitties were painted during my art fair days. And the bats are painted on the matt, so that the kitties are looking up at them. I feel like if I'm not careful I will only be identified as a cat artist. But Halloween and cats go hand in hand. I sold 2 paintings just like these to a guy at Edina's Fall into the Arts Festival. He said his wife would love them and would want both. Of course I was thrilled. It's always fun to make a sale. But unfortunately most of the time you're sitting around not selling. The good old days!

Pop Out Kitty and Pumpkin Pup

What the heck am I going to post next October if I post all Halloween related material this year? But if you got it, post it right? Unlike the craftsy pumpkins of last week, I'm friends with these two all year. They hang in my stairway along side Neon Giraffe, Pink Kitty and Big Eyed Dog. All five beloved characters can now be found on another website. http://www.childrensillustrators.com/ to see my work there hit portfolio directory, then W, then hit my giraffe icon. I was also profiled last week on another blog. http://www.readingminnesota.blogspot.com/ Thankyou very much to Beth Solheim for that honor. And I popped over to the studio of my mentor Carrie Hartman http://www.carriehartman.blogspot.com/ for my first lesson. She is a master at the art of the critique. I learned alot about the use of color. Like how I need to mellow out my background colors so that... well...my forground really pops!

Arts and Crafts

Halloween is the only time of year that I drag out, dare I say it...crafts. Of course I did these paintings. But I also painted all my little craftsy pumpkin buddies. We're only friends during Halloween. When I was doing juried art fairs, crafts were kind of a thorn in my side. I remember one instance in particular. I refer to it as, "the mushroom lady" show. Her booth was across from mine. And her clay mushrooms were selling as fast as her hairy, sleeveless husband could rake in the money. O.K. I might have been a little jealous. And deep down I might have thought one of the mushrooms would look cute in my garden. Darn it, I do like my mushrooms. But I refused to buy one. Then later that Summer I did another show. One for real artists, The Stockholm Art Fair. I wouldn't have to worry about crafts showing up at that one. But wait for it...is that?... the mushroom lady! #@$#! And the worst part of all is that I still wanted to buy one of those darn mushrooms.
