The Mysterious Spheres of Costa Rica

There are over 300 mystery spheres in Costa Rica, ranging in size from a few centimeters to over 15 tons. We toured Finca 6, an old banana plantation in the Osa Peninsula, and learned a bit about the circular mystery. The basalt spheres may represent stars in our solar system, or they could have been simply ornamental. As a sci-fi author, I like to think aliens made them! Google them for the rest of the story, and follow my feet...

This is how the spheres were found, buried in the ground.

A medieval banana transport system.

After touring Finca 6 and the museum, we had a picnic in the nearby town of Sierpe, in a park full of flowering trees, hungry scarlet macaws, and leftover spheres! Nowadays, it’s become a tradition to visit the park on our way to the Boruca Indian Village with a picnic in tow.

The stones were not made by the grinch! We can rule that theory out.

Cano Island, Costa Rica

Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Fins up!

We launched with Utopia Drake Outdoors into the deep blue sea. Drake Bay is wild and remote, and you’ll find it way down south near Panama. After you leave the highway to Puerto Jimenez, en route to Drake Bay, you’re in for a bumpy, steep, and jaw jangling ride. But on the plus side, we did see scarlet macaws on the return trip.

Cano Island had been on our Costa Rica bucket list for years. A whale flapped its tail during the boat ride, and once we jumped into the island waters, we saw many sharks, big fish, leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles. The water was murky, but full of sights. It's hard to swim and take photos at the same time, but I snapped and snorkeled until my camera ran out of gas.

Follow our fins…

Sharks!

Sea Turtles!
We got the best sightings from the boat when they surfaced for air.

Seeing Red in Costa Rica

We stopped to see a hawk sitting on a cow’s head, and stayed for scarlet macaw nirvana! As we passed through the rough jungle corridor that passes for a road in the Osa Peninsula, en route from Drake Bay to Dominical, Costa Rica, we hit the motherload of red feathers. The squawk of a scarlet macaw is unmistakable; it’s loud, demanding, and feisty. The good news is that you’ll always know when the large red parrots are nearby. We watched three pairs competing for a nesting spot for quite some time, amid the lush jungle setting.

Follow my feet…

Sealed with a kiss!

Stay tuned!

Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica

Puerto Jimenez

The untamed shores of the Golfo Dulce, what more can I say?  Sigh. You can buy sunglasses for as little as two bucks (my husband always loses a pair in the rough surf), roam shoeless, abandon all matter of outerwear, pan for gold, park wherever you damn well please, and lose yourself, seemingly forever, in the wilds of primitive jungle and beach.

Is there something new to explore?  Not really.  But who needs new when you have rusty, shabby, old, neglected, and downright wonderful things to see?

Old things have always fascinated me, and these weathered boats have seen better days.  At low tide, they're landlocked and ripe for a photo safari. Follow my feet down memory lane…

The waters of the Osa Peninsula lap against the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

What lies beneath...

Now, where?

Blue and orange is a personal favorite color pairing. This scene is beautiful set against the warm cerulean sea and blue-gray mountains in the distance. I can still feel the warm, mushy sand beneath my feet.  Paradise.
