The Belize Raptor Center

Luna the spectacled owl at The Belize Raptor Center

Today I picked a popular post from my sidebar for another stroll down memory lane. This post isn't that old, but you made it a favorite. I love it too. It's a hoot!

"A wise old owl sat in an oak. The more he saw, the less he spoke. The less he spoke, the more he heard. Why can't we be like that wise old bird?" Edward Hersey Richards

The road sign for the BRC was tiny, weather-beaten, and hand-scrawled, typical signage in and around San Ignacio, Belize. Still, we were curious. Later that same week, our jungle hosts endeared us to the excellent tour at the BRC - not only fantastic, but free. Donations are encouraged; back then, they equaled a free t-shirt.

The tour proceeds rain or shine, tourist, or not since the raptors need food and exercise daily. Follow my lens for a fun, feathered photo safari...

I think this is Ky, the gray-headed kite.

I think this is Jamin, the bat-falcon. Or is it Maya, the Orange-breasted falcon? I have a Maya t-shirt, so I should know, right? Hmmm.

Ghost.

Zion, perhaps? Akna? Not sure.

This is Cora, the black vulture. She is a special bird, beloved by Sarah, the raptor whisperer. Cora follows Sarah everywhere and loves to receive beak massages. I dare you to massage this beak! Sarah did, repeatedly. All creatures need a little love.

At the end of the tour, we spotted baby howler monkeys in the canopy above. I hope this post persuades some of you to spurn the isolated islands like Ambergris Key, and have a real vacation on the mainland.

Xunantunich: The Stone Woman

The rustic ferry to Xunantunich.

"Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win." Stephen King

Xunantunich is named after a ghost.

The legend of the Stone Woman started in 1892 when a researcher witnessed a Mayan maiden ascend the staircase of El Castillo, the main pyramid of Xunantunich. She was wearing a flowing white gown and a tangle of long, dark hair atop her head. When the woman reached the top of the pyramid, she swiveled, revealing penetrating, blood-red eyes. A few seconds later, she disappeared into the stone. The research crew searched the ruin, but she had vanished without a trace.

No one knows the ancient name of this Mayan city near modern-day San Ignacio, Belize, so they named the site Xunantunich. The moniker means Sculpture of a Lady or the Stone Woman.

We didn't see the woman in white when we climbed El Castillo, but she still scares unlucky tourists to this day.

Follow my feet again...

Horses take the ferry too.

Another unpaid passenger.

Camouflage.

El Castillo.

The view from the top of El Castillo is breathtaking - even without a ghost.

"I wouldn't describe myself as lacking in confidence, but I would just say that - the ghosts you chase you never catch." John Malkovich

Placencia: Part 3

“To reach a port we must set sail –
Sail, not tie at anchor
Sail, not drift.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt

This is my last post from Belize, 2020. We sailed the sea, explored Mayan ruins and communed with jungle flora, fauna and rum: Coconut water and One Barrel Rum - Crazy good; Mango juice, spicy ginger ale and rum - Yum!

a) Belize has the best chocolate bread: Cheers Restaurant
b) Belize has the best hot sauce: Marie Sharp's
c) Belize speaks my native tongue! But it's a melting pot of souls.
d) Belize has the best wheat bread: The French Bakery in San Ignacio.
e) Belize has the best smelling soap: Rosa Venus from the grocery store. It smells like a rose garden.
f) Belize has lots of rum!
g) Belize has more fun things to do than any other country in Central America: ancient caves with spooky skeletons, mysterious Mayan ruins, first class snorkeling, islands of fun. It's a foodie paradise. Follow our feet...

The end.

I left the book Gringo Nightmare at the airport. But for us, it was a sweet dream.
