A Year in Review

Every journey is simultaneously a beginning and an ending: I was leaving my old life behind and starting on a road trip to find a new me.” – Debi Tolbert Duggar

What a year! Uff da, Lutefisk, 2020. (my go-to phrase. I’m  part Norwegian, after all) Or, there's the abbreviated phrase the Waffle House used to promote their cheesy eggs: Nuff said.

I remember being happy and hopeful about 2020. I'd survived cancer at the tail-end of 2019, and was enthusiastic about being alive. I always think about Margaret Mitchell, who was hit by a car and died after Gone with the Wind was published. The takeaway: I want to live now in case I get hit by a bus tomorrow. Sure, I canceled a few minor travel adventures. The big kahuna, Belize, happened pre-covid-style fear and loathing. (although, covid was probably already lurking here somewhere) The rest, I masked up for. My M.O. has always been outdoors, so I felt relatively safe amongst trees and grass. Basically, I stuck to take out and picnics. I wore double masks around people. Ew, people.

Now, there's a new Coronaviris strain from the U.K. to worry about, that's 70% more contagious. So, in 2021, my husband and I will be wearing our new N95's. Sigh. So stylish and sexy.

On the last and final week of 2020, I took a quick, photographic road trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoyed my souvenirs this year. I'm glad I have someone to share them with! You can always virtually travel here, safe and snug behind your computer.

Happy New Year!
Safe travels!

Red Wing: 2020

The view from Waconia Cliff.

My month of road-tripping continues with Red Wing, Minnesota. Ever since covid pinned us indoors like hens in a chicken coop, outdoor trails have been bonkers. I hated all the foot traffic before coronavirus, often grumbling about rude pedestrians that won't share trails. I even read an article in the paper about over-crowded trails after covid. Apparently, our outdoor habits are being studied. We failed. Why can't people move over? Sigh. The moral of the story is we had the above trail all to ourselves last Fall. There wasn't one other human. Halleluiah! Follow our feet...

I'm Soaring!

Red Wings Over Red Wing, Minnesota

The word Soar has such energy and power. I have many pieces of art that depict flying or floating animals and people. I even have an illustration of angels floating over a manger. Now, that would be timely. But floating does not have the energy of soaring. If you ask what super power a random person might pick to possess, it would probably be flying. I know I would. The first place I'd go would be the jagged green Na Pali coast of Kauai. What would you pick?

My favorite part of this illustration is the Lake or River Monster. Did you know that Lake Pepin has a mysterious resident?  Well, it does. Although, I've yet to see it rear its head or flap its tail above the Mississippi. Maybe that's why I love to explore this area so much. You never know...

Soar is the theme for www.illustrationfriday.com this week.

Happy Holidays artists and illustrators!

A long time ago at the Pierre Bottineau...

The www.illustrationfriday.com theme return gives me a chance to talk about the latest Children's Book Illustrators Guild show I'm involved in.  My oldish piece, Red Wings Over Red Wing is in the show.  Along with, Sidney the Unstoppable Squirrel.  The Red Wings piece reminded me of return because of all the birds that are returning to our neck of the wood at this time of year.  Actually Cardinals never leave.  And neither do Eagles.  And as for the Lake Creature?  Your guess is as good as mine.  Here's the scoop on the CBIG show. It runs March 1- April 30 at the Penn Lake Library 8800 Penn Ave. S.Bloomington, 55431 612.543.5800

And I couldn't resist tagging the venue of our last CBIG show on this post.  I took all these photos of the historic Pierre Bottineau library a long time ago in a far away land.  North Minneapolis to be exact.  The show is history and the library is full of history as well.  It used to be a brewery.  Here's the scoop... The newest old building in the Minneapolis Public Library system opened in 2003 at the Historic Grain Belt Campus. The 1893 Wagon Shed and the 1913 Millwright Shop were reused and merged with a new structure to create a warm and welcoming, state-of-the-art library. It is a lively neighborhood gathering place where people meet, read, and study. The library and the nearby Bottineau Neighborhood are named for Pierre Bottineau (1817-1895), one of the most colorful characters in early local history. An accomplished guide, trapper, and trader, he spent the prime years of his long, active life opening up the Northwest Corridor communities of the Twin Cities metro area to settlement.

So there you have it.  A brewery tour with out the beer.  Sorry! And here's my piece, Toilet Buddies.  I had this and another funny kitty piece there.  Dessertus Interuptus

And it wasn't so long ago that I entered the latest TDAC big Kraft foods contest.  There are so many great illustrated recipes to choose from.  But there will only be 6 that will be able to bring home the bacon.  Here's my link! http://theydrawandcook.com/recipes/maui-luau-sandwich-by-sharon-wagner

Pumpkin spice and everything nice.

Kittens, ponies, pumpkins and beautiful scenery. A fall day doesn't get much better than this. We followed the Mississippi river down to Red Wing. And finally climbed Barn Bluff. What a view! Then we crossed over to Wisconsin and drove all the way down to our favorite pizza place for dinner. The Stone Barn. But we made a few stops along the way.

Our first stop was in Maiden Rock. We were on a mission to get some bird seed bread at the Pelican bakery there. But the darn bread was sold out.

So our next stop was for pie cookies in Stockholm. Whew! I got the last 2 cookies.

Then on to Maiden Rock Apples. No fall road trip is complete without stopping at an apple orchard.

And lastly we found the sweetest little pumpkin patch. Cheap pumpkins in all shapes and sizes. Barn cats, ponies and smiles. Now for some pizza...

My Pop Out Kitty illustration will probably always make an appearance during my October posts. For more Halloween kitties visit http://www.gattinamycats.blogspot.com/
