Cattle Wrangling in Panama

Another blast from the past...

I stepped from the shower at the exact moment I heard my husband desperately beckoning me to our balcony at Casa Caracol, Panama. What could be happening? A Tsunami, perhaps? Quickly, I slithered into my bottoms and thinking we were alone, cupped my boobs and ran outside. A cleaning lady stood next door, photographing the mysterious spectacle too. Giggling, I ran inside to add some cloth to my upper regions, returning to the balcony amidst a cartoon cloud of smoke.

Something extraordinary was happening, alright…cows. We've been on back roads in Central America during a cattle drive many times. Once, an errant cow almost sideswiped our driver's side mirror. But seeing cattle wrangling on the beach is priceless.

 Only in Central America…

From Dawn till Dusk in Panama City

Sunrise in Panama City. The east side.

(This unpublished post has been lingering around for two years. Better late than never)

The best thing about this high rise condo was the view!

Sunrise in a major city was a complete 180 over our usual travel vantage point. We're usually isolated on a hillside or nestled on a beach. Even so, the lofty perspective was pretty darn cool.

I zoomed in on this photo from our condo on high. They were shooting a commercial. Or just having a killer photo party. The ladies were in complete feathery regalia. I always regretted not going down to see the scene in person.

This was the view that was sandwiched between the city. And all those high rise buildings.

Boats were always cruising by, heading for the Panama Canal.

I turned around!

The west side.

Sunset was spent looking out and about over another vantage point. It was really the only time of day that we could enjoy our tiny balcony, without cooking the books. Among other things...

I hope the graphic designer of these labels was paid well. The graphics are awesome! It's fun to try craft beer in different parts of the world.

Here, the city was just turning on the lights for the night. Headlights and tail lights were a constant blur of light. To see the city at its most vibrant, revisit this Panama post. Neon City

The Moon over Panama. I've seen many a moon over Central America. And counting...

Casco Veijo Architecture

This was my favorite church in Casco Veijo. The old town and most interesting region of Panama City. Any stroll in Casco will be memorable. Especially if you're a photographer. Old and new, crumbling and revived, swanky and gritty all collide here. It's just so alive. New things are always happening here. We passed models on photo shoots and also witnessed the filming of what appeared to be a major commercial. But even with all the new, the past is always bubbling at the surface. You see it everywhere...

These weathered wooden statues really caught my eye.

The statues peek out of all these nooks and crannies.

Meanwhile, at another church, you can sit and bask in the glow of the Golden Alter. Read about the luminous majesty below...

Yet another church.

Aches abound in Casco Veijo. But this one has a story.

I stated in a previous Panama post that some crumbling courtyards, intriguing holes that are still waiting for a modern day spruce up, are now being utilized by food trucks. This one was some kind of cat sanctuary. There were lots of cats and just as many food bowls. Food trucks for cats I guess!

I hope you enjoyed this mini structural tour of old town. I'll be back visiting blogs next week. See you soon.

The Way to Casco Veijo...

A busy dog walker.

We stayed in a high rise amidst the skyscrapers of bustling Panama City last January. We even played a few rounds in the towering Trump casino and joked about him becoming our next president. Ha! We laughed and laughed, thinking it would only happen when pigs fly. Gulp. Good grief. It did.

Panama City was a completely new Central American experience. But the old quarter or Casco Veijo, with its more familiar gritty and crumbling facades, wasn't far away. We walked...

The skyscrapers loom in the distance as we passed this local fish market.

A load of bananas greeted us as we entered the old quarter. The historic part of Panama City.

Now where? My camera led the way...

Who ya gonna call?

This alley of graffiti and crumpled garbage cans was photography nirvana for me.

Casco Viejo is being restored and revitalized as we speak. But many empty ruins remain. One of them held a pop up food truck!

I just love these two gentleman passing time, wearing their Panama hats. It doesn't get more Panama than that!

This week, I reminisce about my vacation pets, Puffy and Petite, over on my other blog, The Chorus of the Crows
