Saguaro National Park

Tall!

I've always loved cacti. When I was a teenager, my neighbor Stella gave me a skinny, little cactus shoot for Christmas. (I think it was an African Milk Plant) Whatever it was, I cherished it. It grew...and grew...and grew. Eventually, there were three, tall, frilly edged cacti stems, reaching for the heavens. I graduated form high school and it followed. I graduated from college and it moved to Minneapolis with me. One day, a friend of my roommate broke off one of the tall, skinny stems. I was livid. But it survived. It grew so tall it reached the ceiling of my new apartment. (no more roommates, or careless morons to destroy it) Alas, when I moved to my first house, it didn't survive the journey.

I still love cacti.

I was over-joyed to see all the desert specimens at Saguaro National Park in Arizona.

Here, the arms grew so heavy they fell to the ground. It is interesting to note that the spears don't grow arms until they are 75-100 years old!

Nest.

Prickly Pear Cactus. I bought some Prickly Pear honey and Prickly Pear sugar for margaritas. Yum!

This trail wasn't long, but it was hot! Still, we reached the look-out. Cacti for days....

I have always been fascinated and in love with cacti and desert landscape myself. I wonder if part of it is because I've spent my entire life in the pine forests of Wisconsin? Thanks so much for the link up.

Saguaro National Park looks amazing! I love cacti as well, they have a lovely collection at the Botanic Gardens here in Madrid.

Thanks for the linkup!

Wonderful photos and what a great story. I have a windowsill full of cacti - though miniatures compared to the ones you've seen.

I didn't know that cactus can grow tall indoors. Now I want to try it. :-) Your photos are awesome, by the way.

The cacti are marvelous. I love the story of your indoor cactus and its adventures. You take the best pictures, Sharon. Thanks for the gift of your eye candy. :-)

Sharon - our son is a big fan of cacti and has so far transported his cacti from home to college. We will see if it makes it as long as you have described in your story! We lived in Arizona for a time and I was always amazed by the saguaro. I wondered if you would mention about the arms starting at the 75 - 100 year mark, and you did. Isn't it fascinating that most humans are ending their lives and the saguaro is just getting started? Thanks for sharing this desert beauty with Mosaic Monday!

I don't have any travel photos to share sadly, or I'd link up. But what impressive cacti and a really nice change of scenery from the brownish green and cold here.

Years ago we lived in that part of the country and got to visit that place a few times. It really was amazing! You just don't realized how many different shapes the cactus can take. We left late one evening and there were tarantulas on the road. I'll never forget that! Loved seeing your photos!

We stayed in Tucson for three seasons ... loved visiting both parts of Saguaro NP. It’s where I learned to love the desert. My favorite cactus was the teddy bear cactus (I think it is real name is the cholla). Thanks for the great pictures, the memories, and for hosting.

I love cacti too. It's interesting to me that we don't get saguaro here in our S CA desert. Not sure what the magical dividing line is that allows them to grow elsewhere but not here. We have a saguaro planted in our front yard that is doing well, and you see them occasionally, but they are not native.

I especially like the flowering cactus shot, though obviously the others are interesting too :)
