Colorful Spirits

I've always been enchanted by cemeteries. This seems like a creepy confession. However, at the beginning of Halloween month, it's clandestine!

Cemeteries in Central America are a celebration. I love the color and creativity. Back in the states, it's much more serious. At home, I always try to find the oldest headstone - the one that is almost illegible and covered in lichen. Consumed, dissolving into the ground - from dust to dust.

This Cemetery in the jungles of El Remate, Guatemala, was full of colorful spirits.

But, not everything was dead. A Mot-Mot.

I thought I'd highlight some of my favorite (and final) resting spots during Halloween month. Obviously, I have to start with the most haunted one. Here's a link: The Spooky Sand Hill Cemetery

You'll find the Sand Hill Cemetery post on my creative writing blog: The Chorus of the Crows. While you're there, be sure to check out my new post. It's about the curse of the Hope Diamond and my strange connection to it!

Wonderful post! I loved seeing all the colorful flowers decorating the graves. Thanks for this cool link-up too! Hope you enjoy my Stonehenge...alas I am being blocked from reading my comments!!! Don't know why. Leave one if you can and I'm going to make an effort to do something about the problem. So far though I haven't been successful! :-(

I loved this post. We should celebrate the lives of our loved ones with spirit and color … have you seen the movie "Coco"? I thought it was a great explanation of the Day of the Dead and its traditions. This year, for Halloween, my husband and I are going to dress up with the Day of the Dead traditions … should be fun!

The cemetery is a favorite place for daily walks around where I live. I sometimes like looking at the momentos left by loved ones on the headstones that give a sense of the lost one. However, most also don't allow such things and will remove so not so colorful. We have one in our small town that has some really old stones. When our middle son was young, it became a tradition for his friend's dad to always take the kids to a local cemetery on Halloween night. He would set up scares for them and the kids loved it. Thanks for sharing your interesting travels.

Beautiful flowers placed on those graves. I share your love of old cemeteries. I was a volunteer at a very historic cemetery in Brooklyn, NY, for many years. We worked with a historian to identify Civil War veterans who were buried in the cemetery, and then we did archival work. I found the old ledgers dating back to the early 1800's fascinating.

I do too! I think the sense of history is fascinating. This may be the most colorful cemetery I've ever seen. Love it! Thanks for sharing.

We're fascinated by cemeteries too, and we also look for the oldest headstones. My daughter and I would especially love to look around in a colorful cemetery like the one in your lovely photos!

As kids, we often rode our bikes to the cemetery (just one in our tiny town) and looked for old tombstones .. and we were taken to funerals and Memorial Day ceremonies -- they were never something to be afraid of. But I was delighted with the ones we saw in Mexico ... and I love the Day of the Dead Celebration.

Oh yes the spirits there are truly colorful. I thought i will be seeing the more eerie tomb since you were looking for the oldest one, haha! I remember during my one and only visit to New Zealand, i was just walking when i encountered a cemetery. I stayed longer and observed the stones till it was already a bit dark that i must already go home. Ours here in the Philippines are much different.

I'm not usually a fan of cemetaries, but you definitely aren't alone in your appreciation of them. I like how you captured the colorful flowers.
