Close Your Mouth

When ever I see people chewing gum with their mouth open I want to say, "Close your mouth or you'll attract flies"  Oh, how I wish one would fly in.  That would certainly be a new gum flavor.  Yuck!

Well, sometimes an open mouth is a good thing.  Like in this lucky capture.  Most birds would love to just open their beek and have nature do the rest.  But this hummer would probably prefer something sweet.

I just love these photos taken in Fortuna, Costa Rica. That's why I'm re-posting my sedate hummer for the 100 post celebration over at Wild Bird Wednesday  Stewart M. is a major bird watcher in Australia.  And he's posting some of his old favorites this week.  It was fun to hit my WBW labels and see all the bird posts I've shared so far.  It was hard to pick a favorite.  We've traveled to some amazing places to bird watch.  But then again I've captured some beautiful Minnesota birds as well.

Hotel el Silencio del Campo

This is where the hummer shots were taken.  At the base of Arenal Volcano.  It is no surprise to take a magical photo in paradise.  I'd love to stroll this side walk again!

Excellent shots Sharon, that little hummer sure has a long beak, guess he needs it for collecting his dinner :) lovely colours also.

great shots I have never seen a H-bird still- this is the reason I do not chew gum.

Great shots! Love the open mouth. At least he's not chewing gum. :-) That's a pet peeve of mine too.

I wish that blogs had a like button just to acknowledge work well done without having to post something. I also love your surreal kitty. It reminds me of a friends artwork with all the collaged images.

How sweet! I also agree that the capture is enhanced by the different textures. You are such a good artist, Sharon, and you notice all the best stuff! :-)

Beautiful photos! I don't think I've ever seen a hummingbird sitting still, let alone with it's beak open.

He looks like he is saying something emphatic ... but he may well be waiting for an insect to fly in ... they do eat more insects than nectar so it would be a boon if it were to happen. Great shot, Sharon.

I love when hummingbirds have something to say:) It's usually rather loud for such a little character:)

Such a cutie, I love it when you can get hummer picks away from the feeder.

Super awesome shots of this hummer. - Sorry but I pop my gum (which annoys a lot of people too).

You are right, you don't often see them at rest. Three years ago a humming bird made a nest just outside our patio door. She laid eggs in it and returned for two more years to lay eggs in it again! She is very comfortable around us and we often see her sitting on a wind chime on our patio preening.

Paradise is RIGHT!!!
What magic you have captured - to fill your soul - and to lift us up . .

I once had a teacher who repeatedly said, "Beauty In, Beauty Out!"

You are living proof . . . thanks!

I've never seen a hummer sit and pose like that. You were so lucky to catch it, but then you've been lucky so many times taking bird photos that I think you must have a magic skill for it. Beautiful!

Forget about open mouthed chewing. Just chewing gum (especially in front of others) is so repulsive. Its crude and crass.

Thats a great set of pictures - and thats some gape on such a little bird. I would have not thought that a hummers beak would open so far.

Nice pick for the 100.

Ahhhh, how much i have told people here not to throw chewing gums on the road, as the birds tend to pick it up and sometimes lead to death. I loved your shots, beautifully captured :)
