Thirsty Bird

This thirsty bird is something that I painted a few years ago. I pulled it out of the basement archives for Hummingbird week. I love the whimsy of it. But if I were to paint it again I would paint the bird with more metallics. To try to capture the true beauty of the bird. I have alot of photos that I could use as inspiration. Look for those later this week.

Monster!
This is Hummingbird week. The theme will reveal itself. Although any painted hummingbirds that may or may not turn up later this week will in no way compare to the real thing. This guy looks like a monster bird. He or she is lucky to fly around the cloud forrest of Costa Rica. They zoom around in all their glory while the tourists snap their cameras as fast as they can. In fact that's my Photo tip of the week. When you're taking pictures of birds
or animals. Take as many shots as you can, and get as close as you can. But it's really the quanity of shots you take that will ensure that you get a good one. This particular monster would take a split second break before feeding. Some of the smaller breeds just hovered near the feeder, never slowing their wings long enough for a good shot. For bird lovers this definately is a magical place. And the birds probably love it as well. If it wasn't for all the tourists, that tasty red sugar water probably wouldn't make an appearence every day!

Snakes On A Painting
Today's title puts a big smile on my face. Another reason I'm smiling is that I am finally done with this painting. It was a little more difficult than most. Can you guess the reason?
The Snakes have some extra parasites or something. Obvious...maybe. Sneaky...scary and fun hopefully! I started this painting awhile ago and finally felt up to the challenge of finishing it. Let me know if it puts a smile on your face...

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
This is one of my favorite places in Florida.
The theme parks may be more exciting and the beaches are hard to beat. But when you're here it's just you and the birds. They sing beautifully as you walk through a maze of old cypress trees. Quiet...calm...peaceful. That's what you'll feel when you're here. And it's easy to take a good picture. I love the zig zag direction of the path in this picture. Photo tip... just bring the camera!
And stay on the boardwalks. There are Alligaters in these swamps!

Bits and pieces
These are pieces of a humble painting
I did about 3 years ago. The images fit together as follows...The goofy bird is hovering over the birdhouse and low and behold it's locked! The key which is cut into the matt board is in the lower right hand corner. Apparently out of reach of the poor bird. This painting is typical of the sort of work I sold at Art fairs. (In the good old days) I would do a little painting and just for fun paint an extra character on the matt framing the piece. Or as with the key actually cut the matt around the extra art. The reason I'm posting these goofy bits and pieces today is the lock. The lock on the birdhouse is that weathered lock I posted on Monday.

Objects of beauty
These locks are from my family farm. To me they are objects of beauty. My favorite one is the most weathered, rusty and used. It looks completely ancient. What a life this lock must have had. I can imagine that it held many mysterious things safe behind it's iron grip. Objects of weathered beauty turn up in my art on a regular basis. I made this memory box last weekend. The project may have been more craft than art. But I have a feeling that this lock will turn up in my paintings for years to come.

Playa Hermosa Sunset
My last post is called nosey dog. I'm currently working on confident dog. O.K... currently might be pushing it. I didn't actually do any art today. Today is all about photography. In fact, I've decided to dedicate half my blog time to it. I have so many pictures, I could probably blog for years without taking any new ones. But what fun would that be? And taking pictures is all about the fun. This picture was taken in Costa Rica last March. Photography tip of the day...What could be better than a beautiful sunset? The silhouette of leaves in the foreground. At least I think so.

My first blog day

This is my first blog day. So I have yet to discover my voice. But I can describe myself a little bit. Starving Artist...restless traveler...weird cat person. I'm hoping that you will be able to get to know me for the most part through my art. And maybe some photography as well. Should we get down to business? This is my art! One percent anyway. The rest is lurking in the basement. It's like fine wine, it just needs to age a little bit.
