Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Puerto Rico means prosperous port, which made it irresistible to pirates. Plus, you needed to pass by the El Morro Fortress to reach the new world. Five hundred years ago, the Spanish Fort began with one cannon and ended with the intimidating six-story Fortress you see today. When an enemy ship passed through the bay between the main island of Puerto Rico and the city of Old San Juan, the Fortress El Caneulo (Puerto Rico side) and El Morro (Old San Juan) created an unpenetrable crossfire that warded off pirates and other countries.

But things transformed when the interlopers could fly over by air. The island changed hands to the United States. The Fort is a fascinating and beautiful place to stroll. Follow my feet...

Iguanas guard the window slits.

The rock patina is weathered and wonderful.

The lighthouse is the icing on a solid and steadfast cake.
