A "flanker" building. The main residence was in the middle, with two flankers on either side. This flanker is all that remains.
Historic Middleton Place, in South Carolina, is home to the ghosts of the enslaved, who toiled harvesting rice, building a plantation, digging sprawling gardens, and working a farm that was the livelihood for a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Middleton is home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America. Now, it is a peaceful haven for animals and birds, humans and humid breezes. But the past is brutal.
Prepare to spend the day, strolling the lush gardens that grow under ethereal strands of moss, touring the remaining residence, and investigating the working farm. Plus, there is a Southern buffet with fried chicken and pecan pie. Need I say more?

It's always interesting to learn more about the history of this part of the country. It sure is a lovely place!
Beautiful grounds that look very British in nature. The water buffalo was a surprise! The painting of the rice paddy was interesting. We saw many rice fields on our way to the lake region in Northern Italy. It is backbreaking work to harvest rice by hand.
Those trees are really spooky. Ts that an old folly (looking like a little castle) or a new building? Great photo. Wasn't the cold storage inventive?
