The Splendors of Spring!

The splendors of spring 2016 left me speechless...

Well, wordless really.

I took a short blogging break while we traveled to wondrous Sedona, Arizona last week. There weren't any fireworks in the desert, but the red rock was ablaze all the same. The trip was an energized, vortex filled visual feast. And on a humorous note, we had such a boring and extended delay at the Phoenix airport on our return, due to storms in Minneapolis, that I finally joined Instagram! I've been playing around with the App ever since. #latetotheparty!

It might be awhile before a photographic travel log shows up here, but you can check out The Best of Sedona over at My3rd Eye and an inspirational Sedona post over at The Chorus of the Crows...

Up North

If you're visiting Duluth and are looking for an easy trail that's just as pretty as its brethrens up north, then the Chester Creek trail is for you. Plus, it starts across the street from Burrito Union. You can't beat that.

Alice would like the mushrooms here.

Even cats like it.

This sparrow is thinking, "If only I was eating rice at Chipotle. Those were happy days. Woe is me."

Hawk Ridge was counting migrating birds and doing a release party of Hawks and Kestrels. At least those were the birds on the menu that day.

"You talk'in to me?"

"Caw. That's the spot. Caw. Now I eat your fingers."

Duluth's Rose Garden in Leif Erikson Park.

And of course stacked rocks. I heart Duluth.

Red Bouquet

One flower is definitely not a bouquet. But add one additional flower, then, it might be. Irregardless, it's my submission for www.illustrationfriday.com this week. My two flower, exotic, tropical bouquet.

I love the vibrant red color. And the black background is the perfect contrast.

The Hood

We were wandering the hood a few weeks ago, and we found this discarded oriole nest. I placed it on this old weathered fence and it looked like a bird!

It even had a beak!

Grass Lake

We are out enjoying our area lakes almost every day of the summer. Lake Harriet is only around 9 blocks away. And Grass lake is only a couple blocks from our backdoor. It's always a good choice for an evening stroll at sunset.

I love the light beams in this photo.

But there's fun to be had in our own backyard. We always have early spring chickadees nesting in our birdhouse. And after they start flying school, my husband always clears out their nesting material in the hopes of new renters.

Well, this year, for the very first time, we had wrens! And if you are a birder, you know how joyous it is to have wrens talking you up. In the past, we have seen them bringing in sticks, but they never chose our box. But this year they stayed. And the summer was all the better with their lively chatter. And then their offspring's little peeps.

It took many stick deliveries to get the nest set up just right.

Many sticks were just too darn large. So I was able to snap a few photos while they were trying to jury rig them in.

The bird house sits over our beautiful iris crop. My husband's grandmother started these very plants. And we are keeping them going in our neck of the city. Now, even my hydrangea are on the tail end of the season.

But it's not just the blooming summer flowers that are saying goodbye.

The wrens have fledged. And all they left behind was a woodsy nest, miniature feathers and one tiny brown speckled egg.

So sweet.

We'll miss you little fellows.

Corkscrew Creatures

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Since I posted a green heron from our 2014 excursion in Corkscrew Swamp last week, I thought it would be timely to post some of the critters we saw this year. In 2015. We didn't see one green heron this year though!

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is the most peaceful of Florida boardwalks. But you won't have it to your self. (Unfortunately there's other tourists) You'll share it with all kinds of critters big and small. Seen and unseen. Heard and unheard. Look up and you'll see a pileated headed wood peckers doing some damage in the tree tops.

And spider webs reflecting the morning light.

Ibis will be high up above. And below.

An old wood stork might look down from above.

Delicate swamp petals will delight.

Fringed and feathered white egrets will patrol the swamp.

Alligators will bellow from below. This one really did!

Great blue herons will sneak up on a snack.

A wood stork might do the old bait and switch.

Is this an anhinga? I barely recognize him when he isn't drying his wings. You'll see him.

A handsome yellow crowned night heron could possibly, sluggishly troll through the muck.

A little blue heron might pick and peck around.

Another white egret might pose for your camera.

And a second blue heron will wait beautifully in a tree.

And there's black snakes. For Heaven's sakes alive!
