This imposing mansion was designed by Gabriel Manigault for his brother, Joseph, in 1803 in Charleston, South Carolina. It is an example of Adam style architecture and resembles a parallelogram.
Joseph Manigault was a descendent of French Huguenots. In the 1600's, his ancestors fled religious persecution in Europe, prospering in America as rice farmers. But since Joseph inherited over 200 slaves from his grandfather, I guess you could say the family decided to persecute others. Joseph's father-in-law, Arthur Middleton, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Fantastic architectural finds
Happy Monday
Much💟love
Gorgeous architecture and furnishings - very sad that those who were persecuted went on to persecute others.
Una gran mansión, con mucha elegancia en su interior.
Me han gustado mucho tus fotografías.
What a fabulous bit of history that is also beautiful!!
Very, very beautiful. I love that staircase and chandelier especially. :-)
Beautiful antiques. I wonder how the family reconciled their religion with slave ownership. - Margy
Beautiful pictures! I like the architecture and some of the artifacts.
Sharon - the architecture is stunning. I especially like the staircase and the plasterwork on and along the ceilings. Thanks so much for sharing all of your travel photos with Mosaic Monday throughout 2021!
I love that last photo...how clever of you to take it! And this type of building is very interesting and must have been something to build. Enjoy your week.
What a beautiful home. I love the staircase. Thanks for the party.
What granduer - It's beautiful. I do like your framing in the openning. We forget how ugly the history is when we get distracted by the opulence. Have a wonderful Christmas and a lovely break. Stay safe and see you mid Jan
Thank you for showing me!
