Vail, Colorado

We flew into Vail, (if you count the Gondola ride) and saw the scenic Alpine sights. All of this happened in a flash over Labor day weekend. It was the most fun we've ever had on that particular holiday. And the best part was - wait for it - it was free! Really? Ritzy, touristy Vail...for free? Well, if your hobby is collecting points and miles like my husband, then, it's possible.

Pine Squirrel.

The Forest-Flyer Roller Coaster. It was a blast!

Beam me up!

The town of Vail is a measly 8,000 feet - full of swanky tourists, round-abouts, money and shops. At the top, it's over 10,000 feet. The mountain peaks stick to the ridge like shark teeth, and the smokey-blue color seems to dissolve into the sky.

We rode the Gondola up on the left side of town and hiked an easy two mile trek to the other side. Once there, we inhaled killer waffle-fry nachos, watched fat chipmunks scurry about, zoomed helter-skelter on the forest Flyer, and finally, sailed through the trees back to town.

It was a great day!

Fun use of those travel points. With our Colorado family, we’ve spent some wonderful off-season days in other beautiful Co. destination resort towns, but have only driven through Vail. Obviously we need to remedy that soon. Thanks for taking us along in the meanwhile.

I used to cross country ski in Vail and environs. It's lovely, and your pictures made me miss it even more. But that cool ride wasn't there back then. What fun! :-)

Fun photos, Sharon. I love Vail! It was the first ski resort I ever visited when my son moved to Denver over 10 years ago. We loved Colorado so much we now also live here

I've been to Vail several times - it's one of my favorite spots in Colorado - in winter and summer - and I've never known there is a roller coaster there. I can't wait to go back now! Glad you had such a great time!

Free is sweet! My hubby has snowboarded in Vail many times, but we have never been there in the summer time. My brother who lives in Colorado likes to say that people move there for the winter but stay for the summer! Thanks for hosting!
