Lake Peten Itza

I've decided to repost a curated mix of favorite destinations for a time. As you may have heard, I've surpassed 1,000 posts! It's time to recycle.

While touring the highlights of Guatemala, we stayed in El Remate, a small village on the Eastern shore of Lake Peten Itza. Tikal's grand pyramids lie hidden in the surrounding jungle, among other mysterious Mayan relics. But there is more to be savored here (although, to be sure, the ruins are first-rate), like a serene lowland jungle overflowing with simple pleasures. Today, take a walk along the shore; natural delights await in the weeds.

Follow my feet…

There were colorful purple gallinules, bobbing among the lily pads. They were so fast, dipping into the water with tails up, that I could barely get a photo.

Splendor.

There were several green herons floating among the trash-can sized pads.

So beautiful!

King fishers watched from above.

We walked all the way to the end.

We were alone...

for awhile.

I wish I could take this walk right now. Sigh.

Well, I'm particularly fond of Mayan ruins, but I'd love to see this wonderful scenery, the beautiful birds, the tempting boardwalks which, I fear, I might not be able to walk.
Thanks for sharing.

You go on the best adventures!! What a beautiful little boardwalk. Wish I could take that walk right now myself. Never seen jagged-edged lily pads like that.
