Signal Hill Petroglyphs

Desert garden.

The Signal Hill petroglyphs are accessible and intriguing. They were created 800 years ago by the Hohokam and can be found in Saguaro National Park. This hike was one of the highlights of our visit to Tucson. Follow our tracks...

Signal Hill: a scrubby pile of rocks.

But look!

I love this photo.

I'll never forget our visit to Boquete Bees in Panama. Back then, the guide and bee-keeper pointed out ancient petroglyphs embedded here-and-there on the honey farm. She said the rock swirls were sacred energy markers. I don't know what the Hohokam intended when they created their spirals, but I like to imagine it is the site of an ancient vortex.

I know it is the site of desolate beauty.

Sharon - I love saguaros, and so your pictures of the desert are thrilling to me. And the barrel cactus with the blooms on top - neat-o. The petroglyphs are the icing on the cake! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

I love the photo with the petroglyph and mountains too. All very fascinating. It would be interesting to have the original people actually tell us what they were thinking when they made these designs.

When I have the opportunity to visit sites like the one you did, I sometimes wonder if the locations are like rest stops in ancient times. The petroglyphs talk about where people are resting.

We all have to create our own interpretation of petroglyphs ..... I wish someone had left us a key! That one on the high rock is a wonderful photo and just has to have been a marker for some kind of gathering .

Wow! I had no idea that there existed, so thanks so much for sharing! It's fascinating to think about their original meaning--if there is one :)

It's great to see you joining us on 'My Corner of the World' this week!

I love petroglyphs and am amazed at how long they have been around and the number that survive today. I am also interested in certain designs as similar across a wide area.

Cool find! I love finding petroglyphs and pictographs. They are so easy to miss... I'm sure I've walked right past many more than I've found. But you can't help but wonder about their meaning and who created them. It boggles the mind!
