Feather week

What can I say about a humble and silly little painting such as this. ( A small framed piece from my art fair days.) The feather was painted on the matt board framing the piece. I can't imagine why this egg/bird didn't sell. LOL! I feel the need to show you some real birds. See below.

Something to talk about

Let's talk birds. The fiesty hummingbird photo was taken at El Silencio del Campo in Costa Rica this year. We took a movie on our camera of the little guy. He talked and groomed his feathers for us. Maybe not Oscar worthy, but darn cute. And the Hawk photo was taken at one of my Florida Fav's, Corksrew Swamp Sanctuary. I didn't even need binoculars (or eyes like a hawk) for a great view of this guy. These birds are much more interesting than my silly bird egg!

I told you I was a Princess!

You'll probably think I'm 100 years old by how faded the top picture is. It's a mini me. I think I was given my first crown in a very, very offical ceremony. And I got so many roses I could barely hold them all. Then at a later ceremony I'm shown with my future husband. You can't imagine what I had to do to get out of my arranged marriage with him! We're carrying our crowns and it's all very serious. Of course I'm not being serious at all. As you may have guessed it looks suspiciously like prom. No wonder I'm painting myself as a princess. I never went on to become prom queen!

Princess and the Me

After seeing this self portrait, it probably comes as no surprise that Halloween is my favorite holiday. I used to make elaborate costumes and celebrate in style. But I never was a princess. So I finally got to live out that fantasy or at least paint it. I joked in an earlier blog post that I wasn't sure if my pet leopard was lovingly looking up at me. Or he just might be waiting for me to jump off the bed. (So he can have me as a snack.) But either way, no fantasy is complete without some exotic pets. I saw my first wild Scarlet Macaw in Costa Rica this year. So I had to include an exotic bird in the mix. But this princess would definately let the Macaw chart her own flight path around the castle. No cages for sure. I wouldn't have to clean up the mess! I did have another less indulgant reason for painting this portrait. My Devil/Angel Baby

For my photo pick today I chose to highlight my first critter. I coined the phrase,"She's as good as she is bad" And that really said it all. It was almost exactly a year ago that Baby found herself at the pearly gates. And when God appeared, she proceded to bat at his feet with a vengence. That was how she greeted strangers. So did she sprout horns instead of wings? To find out the truth depends on if you've been naughty or nice! See post below for more details.

Devil Baby flys over Squirrel

I painted these two window scenes for "Toliet buddies" Do you recognize the winner? Hint...it's not the kinky Squirrel. I say kinky because he would have been peering in the bathroom window with those binoculars. And my cats are naked after all!

Toliet Buddies

This whimsical illustration was inspired by life with my naughty cats. Acua (alias...Cougar and Chewy) is the one dangling the dental floss. He's an expert at breaking into the medicine cabinet and knocking off a few unmentionables. Now if only he could actually learn to floss his teeth right? Hana (alias... Froggie and little Aquatic) is the one popping out of the bubble bath. Punishment, as in cat meets squirt bottle. Forget about it! She loves the water. But she would never give herself a real bath. Only because she would expect her servant (me) to do it for her. And my now departed Baby is the devil/angel floating in the window. Regarding a cat like Baby, it might be a little presumptuous to only paint wings on the fiesty critter. So without knowing which way she went I added the horns as well!

Mermaid Mate

I would get pretty lonely down there under the Sea without my trusty mate Dean. Although to truely experience Ocean life he may have to invest in scuba gear. With just a snorkel he will only be able to gaze at his Mermaid wife from the surface! Of cource I have other Ocean buddies like this Sea turtle. A picture taken on Hawaii's Big Island. If I really was a Mermaid, swimming the waters of the Big Island would be totally Shaka for this Wahine. P.S. Be sure to check out my Lemonade Stand Award below. Mahalo and Aloha!

The Lemonade Stand Award

I was given this fun award by SquirrelQueen at http://www.squirrelqueen2.blogspot.com/ How could you not want to visit a blog with a name like Squirrel Queen right? So I'm passing the award on to a few other blogs that I follow. My friend Nina should have a positive attitude, (a Lemonade stand platitude) she's illustrating her first picturebook. Check her out at http://www.ninacrittenden.blogspot.com/ And I've always loved the photographic journeys of Laurie at http://www.creatingpicturesinmymind.blogspot.com/ And I felt like I was visiting the Tajmahal while reading Charmine's http://www.travelyestravel.blogspot.com/ Lastly a big THANKYOU to all my blog followers. Some of my friends and family have never even looked at my blog! So you guys all rock!

Mermaid Me

I decided to delay the release of "Princess and the Me" and post "Mermaid Me" first. I might try to post the latter on pay per view or try to take up a collection for a new crown! "Mermaid Me" was illustrated for CBIG. Which you can check out at http://www.childrens-illustrators.com/ Finally, an excuse to paint a self portrait. I'm such a Ham about my art. When I was a kid the first thing that friends and relatives were subjected to was me and my latest masterpiece. I'm sure they barely had a chance to step in the door. And painting myself as a mermaid was a no brainer. As you can see I managed to find some art supplies and do some painting on the Ocean floor. Just another day at the office.

Whitewashed, Weathered and Worn

When I admitted that I loved to take pictures of old barns in my college photography class, the other students snickered. It was so been there done that, common and basically uncool. Well, I've encountered a few curious cows in my pursuit of barn greatness. And they seemed to be relatively surprised by me and my camera. So obviously that means that some barns have yet to be discovered! The three pictures posted today (see below) are all glamour shots of the same old building from my family farm. My uncle grew up there as well. He told me a story about that old building. That when he was a kid the old gal became infested with rats. So they locked the biggest and baddest Tomcat in there overnight. The next morning the rats were stacked up a mile high by the door. But there is either a crack in his story or it wasn't the door I photographed. Do you see that opening? You could practically fit a whole cow through it!

Sidney the Unstoppable Squirrel

I'm posting another Sidney the Unstoppable Squirrel illustration in honor of Lille Diane and her blog ...This Time Tommorrow... http://www.woodstocklily.com/ She gave me the "One lovely blog award" Along with some of her other favorite new blogs. She enjoys the antics of her many Squirrel friends. ( you either love them or hate them, right?) But her latest post is about a day at the Zoo with some great shots of the king of the jungle. One of the elements of the award is to pass it on to other blogs. Which I might wait to do for a surprise attack later on. Today's illustration shows Sidney sneaking up on his friend Carmen the chipmunk. Here's a caption...Sidney knew he needed to find the red fox. So he headed straight for the nest of Carmen the chipmunk. She was sort of the forest know it all. Sidney tried to be quiet as he approached Carmen's nest. But he stepped on a big Orange leaf and CRUNCH...CRACKLE...CRUNCH! Carmen's head popped up. "Is that you Sidney the squirrel?" Sidney giggled, "Yes it's me." The end. Editor's note...that's not really the end but it is for now!
